Prairie Grace Designs, owned by Mary Lynn Gehrett, specializes in hand-dyed wool, silk and linen, hand-hooked rugs, rug design and flower whimsies. Mary Lynn started rug hooking in the early 90’s from a kit she found at a local quilt shop. Eager to learn more about this fantastic art form, she attended rug-hooking camps around the country. Now Mary Lynn frequents Gene Shepherd’s Cambria Pines Rug Camp in Cambria, CA, to hone her skill.
Mary Lynn has loved color and fiber since she was a little girl. As a member of the Eager Beaver’s 4-H Club in Normal, IL, Mary Lynn learned to crochet, knit, sew and make candles to show at the county fair. Working with rug hooking, English proddy, art cloth and surface design now, Mary Lynn combines color and fiber together in works of art for others to enjoy. She uses both new and recycled wool in her designs, keeping with her love for a “greener” planet.
Much of Mary Lynn’s inspiration for colors and design come from 2 ½ acres of Illinois prairie that she and her husband are restoring. Her recent rug, ‘Prairie Blooms’, is featured in the book, “Prepared to Dye” by Gene Shepherd. The prairie sky in her rug is a brilliant blue and the dye technique is discussed in this book.
